The pearl, the mother of pearl and the commitment to the ocean
As a pioneer of committed jewelry in France, JEM Jewellery Ethically Minded has had a mission for the past 10 years: to inspire through beauty, to stimulate a movement of progress, and to act for the future. A modern, sustainable and committed jewelry, based on values of transparency, conscience and respect.
Since its inception, all JEM creations have been fashioned in France from Fairmined-certified ethical gold. In 2018, the House introduces its first stones, making the bold and visionary choice of laboratory-formed diamond, officially called synthetic diamond - a new generation diamond, respectful of the environment and people, and fully traced.
December 2021, JEM explores a new territory and appropriates a traditional jewelry material: mother-of-pearl and its jewel, the pearl.
Étreintes Collection by Pauline Deltour for JEM, 2019
By bringing color to its designs for the first time, JEM is now evolving the now iconic Étreintes collection, conceived and designed by the talented Pauline Deltour. A collection presented in compositions of half parts that stands out for its ingenuity and mischief and is as appealing as it is delightful for its obviousness.
Adorned with pearls and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, each piece of Étreintes jewelry is revealed in new, intense and vivid colors: deep blue, gold and bronze.
A reasoned culture
A symbol of the beauty and magic of the oceans, the pearl is also an emblem of the health of ecosystems. Sustainable pearl farming helps to preserve marine biodiversity and naturally regulate ocean waters.
JEM's pearls, with their intense colors, come from pearl farms carefully selected for the quality of their pearls and nacre, but also for their commitment to the preservation of marine habitats.
THE PEARLS OF FIJI
The Fiji archipelago is a place known for its pearl culture. Fiji's pearls represent 0.1% of Oceania's production, which itself represents 4.6% of the world's production. With harvests limited to less than 20,000 pearls per year, these gems of the ocean are coveted by pearl connoisseurs around the world for their rarity and their natural range of unique and vibrant colors, without any additives.
JEM works hand in hand with a partner of choice: J.HUNTER PEARLS.
Born to an American father and a Fijian mother, Justin Hunter is a committed marine biologist who works for a responsible, positive pearl culture and plays a role in raising awareness among local populations on the need and means to protect marine ecosystems. Located in the heart of the Pacific, his pearl farm is a model of production that respects the environment and people.
In 2008, it established an environmental code of practice that serves as a framework for sustainable pearl farming: the ECOP (Environmental Code of Practice). It promotes the employment of local populations in partnership with the city of SavuSavu, the first city to obtain the status of "Blue Town" in favor of the economic and social sustainability of communities.
As the initiator of the Blue Pledge program, which brings together several Pacific pearl farmers seeking to make a concrete contribution to the health of the oceans and the climate, J.Hunter is a pioneer in defining a "circular blue economy".
THE PEARLS OF TAHITI
The Kamoka pearl farm in north-east Tahiti is also a reference in sustainable pearl farming. Their reasoned and rigorous breeding method favours the maintenance of oceanic biodiversity. Member of the 1% for the Planet movement, Kamoka Pearls has been working with local communities to implement best practices in preserving marine environments for over 20 years.
The versatile and brilliant light of the unique hues emanating from the pearl, the shimmering bluish, dark green and white reflections of the mother of pearl.
A stronger commitment: saving the oceans and protecting coral reefs
The JEM collections have always disseminated fundamental values within their aesthetic. Through the pearl and mother-of-pearl, symbols of the beauty of the sea, we wish to take part in one of the essential causes of our generation, the protection of our oceans. By supporting the action of the Coral Guardian association, we want to participate in the restoration of coral reefs.
Each piece of jewelry adorned with pearls or mother-of-pearl is accompanied by the adoption of a coral, cared for and transplanted by Coral Guardian.
Since 2012, Coral Guardian has been committed to restoring the seabed in Indonesia and more recently off the coast of Spain.
Forty percent of coral reefs and mangroves have disappeared in recent years. Yet, corals are an invaluable asset for the conservation of the marine world: according to scientists, tropical coral reefs host more than 25% of the known marine biodiversity. True lungs of the oceans, the reefs play an essential role in the fight against climate change, their conservation is an emergency.
